About James Hoffman

Owner & CEO, Logline Supply

My name is James Hoffman, and I’m the proud owner and CEO of Logline Supply, a forward-thinking logging and timber company headquartered in Sitka, Alaska. My journey to becoming a leader in the forestry industry didn’t begin in the woods, it began behind a drafting table.

For 23 years, I worked as a licensed architect, leading design and construction projects across the country. My architectural career was fueled by a deep passion for sustainable design, structural integrity, and an appreciation for natural materials especially wood. I had the opportunity to work with some of the finest materials on the planet, often wondering where those materials originated. This curiosity and passion ultimately drew me back to my roots.

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design and my Master of Architecture from North Dakota State University, an institution that not only taught me how to design with precision but also how to think holistically about the built and natural environments. My academic and professional foundation instilled in me values of craftsmanship, planning, sustainability, and leadership, all of which I bring into the day-to-day operations of Logline Supply.

In 2021, I made a pivotal decision to leave behind my architectural practice and take over the family’s logging business, an industry I had always admired but hadn’t yet stepped into professionally. This wasn’t just a career change; it was a personal mission to transform a traditional logging operation into a modern, sustainable, and innovative timber supply company that balances economic growth with environmental responsibility.

A Vision for the Future

Since taking over Logline Supply, my goal has been twofold:
-
To expand our operations and reach new markets while maintaining the highest standards of environmental care and sustainable practice.
-
To modernize the business infrastructure from equipment and logistics to marketing and customer engagement, so that we could remain competitive in an evolving industry without compromising our principles.

We’ve built a company that values both the land and the labor, and that approach is resonating with our customers, partners, and communities. We now supply premium Alaskan timber such as Sitka Spruce, Hemlock, Western Red Cedar, and Yellow Cedar in various grades and dimensions. We offer custom milling, land clearing, and large-scale procurement services while keeping environmental stewardship at the forefront of everything we do.

Our Approach: Sustainable, Transparent, Accountable

From day one, I’ve focused on aligning our practices with the guidelines set forth by the USDA Forest Service. We integrate reforestation, erosion control, habitat preservation, and minimal-impact logging into every project. Our commitment to sustainability isn’t just a marketing statement, it’s part of our operational DNA. We believe that a healthy forest equals a healthy business, and we’ve built our model to ensure we’re not just taking from the land, but also giving back.

We've partnered with local conservation groups, educated our team on best practices for wildlife protection, and invested in low-emission equipment that reduces our environmental footprint. Our operations are designed not only to harvest wood efficiently but also to ensure forests remain vibrant and productive for generations to come.

Measurable Growth Since 2021

Since I took over the company, Logline Supply has achieved remarkable growth. Some key highlights include:
-
Securing long-term contracts with several construction and furniture manufacturers in the Pacific Northwest and beyond
-
Expanding our timber portfolio to include multiple grades, dimensions, and species native to Alaska
-
Launching a company-wide digital transformation, including the development of an e-commerce-ready website and online inquiry system
-
Increasing operational capacity by 40% through new equipment investments and workforce expansion
-
Building a team of seasoned professionals, including a finance manager, operations manager, and environmental compliance officer to support our vision

A Leadership Style Rooted in Integrity

As a business leader, I value transparency, loyalty, innovation, and hard work. I’m on-site regularly, working alongside our team, meeting with landowners, or visiting mills to ensure our product meets our exacting standards. I believe leadership is earned, not given and that belief drives how I run this company every day.

Logline Supply is not just a business to me, it’s a legacy. It represents the fusion of two careers: one that focused on designing with wood, and another that ensures we can continue to source it responsibly.
